Arnie Milstein, M.D.

As Medical Director, Arnie Milstein identifies and incubates PBGH strategies and innovations (clinical, purchaser, and measurement) to improve health outcomes, experience and affordability. Dr. Milstein has been the Medical Director of PBGH since the organization’s inception.

Dr. Milstein is a Professor of Medicine at Stanford and directs the Stanford Clinical Excellence Research Center. The Center is a collaboration of the Schools of Medicine, Engineering and Business to design and demonstrate in multi-state locations new health care delivery models that safely lower per capita health care spending and improve patients’ experience of their care.

Before joining Stanford’s faculty, his career of applied research spanned private and public sector health care delivery and purchasing strategy. Dr. Milstein served as the National Health Care Thought Leader at Mercer. After launching a health care performance improvement firm subsequently acquired by Mercer and expanded globally, he co-founded two nationally influential public benefit initiatives, the Leapfrog Group in 1989 and the Consumer-Purchaser Disclosure Project 7 years later. He also served on the faculty of UCSF’s Health Policy Institute and was appointed to a six-year term as a Congressional MedPAC Commissioner.

Citing his nationally distinguished innovation in health care policy and delivery methods, he was selected for the highest annual award of both the National Business Group on Health (NBGH) and of the American College of Medical Quality. Elected to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academy of Sciences, he chaired the planning committee of its series on best methods to lower per capita health care spending and improve clinical outcomes.

Dr. Milstein holds a B.A. in Economics from Harvard, an M.D. from Tufts, and an M.P.H. in Healthcare Evaluation from the University of California, Berkeley.
